Notable sustainability projects:

FedEx Ground is committed to reducing its environmental impact and being a good corporate citizen in the communities in which we work and live. In 2008, the Sustainability Steering Committee lead by the company’s Chief Operations Officer and Senior Vice President of Operations and Engineering was created to review, track and analyze current and proposed sustainability initiatives by gathering the Managing Directors for all key departments on a monthly basis. Through the development of this steering committee, the organization is able to efficiently review and implement numerous initiatives that reduce its impact and lower operational costs. Two of these projects are highlighted below.

FedEx Ground completed the largest roof-mounted solar power installation in North America at its Woodbridge, NJ hub in December 2009. The solar power system consists of 12,400 solar panels covering 3.3 acres of the roof and will produce an estimated 2.7 million kilowatt hours of electricity per year which is expected to supply 30% of the facility’s total annual electricity consumption. This alternative energy project is estimated to have an annual greenhouse gas reduction savings equivalent to removing over 300 passenger cars from the road each year.

In 2006, FedEx Ground created a corporate recycling program titled Ground Green. Through the use of its “hub and spoke” type of operations, waste plastic film is transferred from over 500 field stations to our hub locations where it is baled then recycled through several national recycling vendors. In turn, we purchase new smalls bags from these vendors which consist of 30% of our recycled plastics. In addition to the plastic recycling program, FedEx Ground facilities recycle paper, scrap metal, aluminum, glass, plastics, wood pallets, electronics, and cardboard where feasible. Since the implementation of the Ground Green program, more than 18,000 tons of waste materials have been recycled which is equivalent to diverting over 1,900 trash collection trucks from landfills.

Sustainability-related facts:

  • Annual kWh & GHG reduction due to lighting retrofits: 3,453,258 kWh; 649.22 CO2e
  • Estimated annual alternative energy produced: 2.7 Million kWh (Solar)
  • Total GHG reduction through corporate recycling program: 21,488 tons CO2e
  • 5-Minute Automatic Idle Shutdown for yard tractors and switchers: 60,329 gallons of fuel saved annually; 608 tons CO2e annual savings
  • Installation of occupancy light switch sensors in all conference rooms and restrooms at Corporate office: 71,885 kWh annually; 50.74 tons CO2e annually
