SUSTAINABILITY OFFICERS:

Showing How Water Matters for World Environment Day

Feature Company: BNY Mellon

Sustainability Coordinator/Representative: Apple White

Employees: 7,000 in Pittsburgh; 42,000 worldwide

Individuals impacted: Established in 2007 from the merger of Mellon Financial Corporation and The Bank of New York Company, Inc., BNY Mellon is a leading asset management and securities services company, uniquely focused to help clients manage and move their financial assets and succeed in the rapidly changing global marketplace. Headquartered in New York, BNY Mellon has $22.3 trillion in assets under custody or administration and $1.1 trillion under management.

We have locations across 6 continents, in 34 countries.

Notable sustainability projects:

BNY Mellon pursues a balanced environmental strategy that includes energy-efficiency goals for our owned and controlled properties, along with investments in renewable and alternative energy sources. We strive to reduce our emissions through a combination of direct energy management and off-sets. The company also provides environmental investment products and services to the financial markets, and has established an employee culture that values and recognizes the benefits of environmentally sustainable operations.

By focusing on sustainability in our real estate operations, we are driving the peak performance of our facilities while easing our carbon footprint. We recently completed a scan of all properties we own or control around the world, some 9 million square feet or 59 percent of the total portfolio, and determined that 6.92 million square feet would qualify for ENERGY STAR awards.

BNY Mellon tracks its carbon emissions in order to measure and manage them.  We publicly and voluntarily report greenhouse gas emissions for every owned, controlled or leased facility in the 34 countries in which BNY Mellon operates through the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).

In January 2010 we announced the purchase of 1.125 million Renewable Energy Credits, or RECs. For 2010, BNY Mellon’s new five-year renewable energy agreement offsets 75 percent of the company’s projected U.S. electric utility use.

During 2009, BNY Mellon achieved 11 ENERGY STAR awards from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) covering more than 5.5 million square feet and a full 80 percent of the company’s eligible owned and controlled properties.  Nearly half of BNY Mellon’s employees work in our ENERGY STAR properties.

BNY Mellon completed two U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED ®) Commercial Interior projects, awarded silver and gold, during 2009.  We recently attained a LEED Existing Building gold certification (approx. 380,000 sq ft), and have five LEED Accredited Professionals on our staff.

The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) lists BNY Mellon in its Carbon Disclosure Leaders Index, and top 5 among all Financial Institutions in the S&P 500.

BNY Mellon is ranked No. 17 on EPA's National Top 50 Green Power Purchasers, up from 37 last year, and No. 11 on EPA’s Fortune 500 list.
