Presented by: Champions for Sustainability (C4S), a program of Sustainable Pittsburgh, the Business Climate Coalition, and the Pittsburgh Climate Initiative

This event, designed to inspire businesses in Southwestern Pennsylvania, features leading firms that are being proactive in managing how they use energy. Participants will have a chance to interact with a range of internationally-recognized businesses that have demonstrated cost savings and innovative practices in energy measurement and savings. After the interactive panel discussion, participants will gain resources and make connections to enable them to track their energy profiles, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and realize cost savings. Businesses that track and report their energy usage:

· Demonstrate their commitment to sustainability
· Save money by saving energy
· Improve transparency
· Qualify for incentive programs
· Are enabled to set well defined goals
· Reduce legal risk due to a changing regulatory environment
· Build market share
· Take action that illustrate their commitment to best management practice

This conference highlights ways in which our region leads in the management of water and how we are using our greatest asset. The event is intended for professionals seeking to learn about practical solutions as well as engineering practitioners looking to understand what is on the minds of community leaders relating to sustainability and clean water. 

This conference builds on the conversation launched during the Water Matters! Conference held in June 2010 as part of the Pittsburgh region’s World Environment Day 2010 celebration.

One of the key strategies used by advanced economies that maintain an extensive regional manufacturing infrastructure involves promoting ways for manufacturers to climb higher on the value chain.  This means companies supply products and solutions that demand a higher return because the products and services reflect greater levels of skills, knowledge, capabilities, and innovation. 

Southwestern Pennsylvania is well-positioned to help its manufacturers command the growing field of products based on sustainable solutions—products that meet the quality functional needs that other business or retail consumers want, while using materials that eliminate or reduce the impacts of those products that are otherwise externalized on society as a whole. 

This workshop features manufacturers and purchasers who have successfully achieved sustainable product certification as well as guidance on the certification process itself. Two panels of high profile industry leaders provide details on the benefits of certification—in terms of financial payback, regulatory risk minimization, and, most importantly, as an innovation driver for tapping into growing new markets.

Credibility of green claims continues to impact how sustainable products are perceived in the marketplace. Greenwashing has become commonplace. This workshop provides certified and credible/verifiable standards that address greenwashing concerns in an increasingly complex marketplace.

Our region's conversation and knowledge of green chemistry continues! Our first roundtable in January highlighted the inspiration for products and processes that are compatible with natural systems. The second roundtable in March focused on a dabate over policies pertaining to the impacts of what we make for our world's markets and consumers.

Workshop #3 highlights the achievable to inspire the possible. Our guest speaker for Session #1, Preventing Pollution By Design, will be John R. Ehrenfeld, author of Sustainability By Design.

This first roundtable will be held at the Alcoa Corporate Center in Pittsburgh. Built in 1998, Alcoa's aluminum-and-glass Corporate Center on Pittsburgh's North Shore riverfront used many design ideas that are now standards in the Green Building portfolio.
